Future Fund mulling over tobacco investments

Future Fund mulling over tobacco investments.

In Australia a major decision is due shortly from the Future Fund, one of the largest pension funds, about whether to continue investing in tobacco.  There is a clear hint in this article that Australia’s international treaty obligations under the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control will be an important factor in the decision.  The fund has already excluded cluster bomb production on the back of the international treaty dealing with that issue.

New Zealand SuperFund already excludes cluster bombs and tobacco due to their incompatability with Treaty obligations, and I would expect Australia to follow suit here.

To date no UK funds have followed a similar path.  If any public health colleagues or pension fund managers in England are interested in pursuing this angle in their councils please get in touch.
