Spreadsheet update

I have just uploaded a revised spreadsheet as I now have Brent and Hackney’s data available.  As the remaining London Borough data comes in I will post updates.
Please note the spreadsheet is best downloaded as you cannot see all columns in the online version.  Alternatively contact me for the excel spreadsheet by email.

Also note that West Yorkshire is only a partial picture as I am awaiting the outcome of my appeal to the Freedom of Information Commissioner regarding West Yorkshire’s refusal to divulge tobacco holdings.

I can’t seem to find an entry for Reading Borough Council. Although there is Berkshire but there is no such local authority as Berkshire. Or does Berkshire’s no direct holdings mean West Berkshire and all the the Unitary Authorities in Berkshire have no direct holdings?

      Hi Jamie

Thanks for the query. There is usually one council that administers the pension fund for each traditional county. Reading doesn’t have its own fund, but probably has a councillor on the pension fund committee. Berkshire’s fund is administered by the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead on behalf of the county.
The return from Berkshire means that it doesn’t hold any direct investments in tobacco companies, but will have holdings through pooled investments. These are investments similar to personal investment products such as ISAs that include a basket of different shares.

Some of these pooled funds can have very high levels of tobacco within them (15-20%). In my research to date I have only looked at direct holdings, not pooled investments. It is possible to ask Berkshire fund what proportion of the fund is invested in tobacco through pooled funds, though it is not always easy to answer that question accurately. You could also ask if it invests in any funds where the value of tobacco holdings exceeds say 2%, and if so to name those funds and the % tobacco within them.

Hope this helps. Come back to me if you wish.

      Thanks for your interest.
